    DESCRIPTION
    Vincent van Gogh
    (
    Dutch
    Zundert, March 30, 1853 - Auvers-sur-Oise, July 29, 1890)
Attributed: homme fumant la pipe (
    probably a resident of
Nuenen) , oil on canvas , signed at the bottom ,stamp
    at back.
He was the author of nearly nine hundred paintings and more than a thousand drawings, not to mention the numerous sketches not completed and the many notes probably intended for the imitation of artistic drawings of Japanese origin. As brilliant as he was misunderstood if not downright scorned in life, Van Gogh profoundly influenced the art of the twentieth century; after spending many years suffering from frequent mental disorders, he died at the age of only thirty-seven.
He began drawing as a child despite the criticisms of his father, a Protestant pastor who continued to give him strict rules; he continued to draw anyway until he decided to become a real painter. He began painting late, at the age of twenty-seven, making many of his best-known works over the last two years of his life. His subjects consisted of self-portraits, landscapes, still lifes of flowers, paintings with cypresses, depictions of wheat fields and sunflowers. His training is due to the example of the landscape realism of the Barbizon painters and the ethical and social message of Jean-François Millet.
It was during his years in Nuenen that van Gogh truly emerged as a great artist. Many of the paintings below depict peasants working in the fields, a subject Vincent was particularly fond of. The works themselves clearly show a growing confidence in the technique. Van Gogh's time in Nuenen proved to be a formidable learning experience, as Vincent defined his own unique style. Many of the peasant portraits below can be seen as studies through which van Gogh was able to execute what many consider to be his first major painting: The Potato Eaters. (WIKIPEDIA)
