    Description

A rare press kit for John Carpenter's The Thing from 1982 featuring a 11 1/4" x 14 1/2" folding portfolio with the early key art issued by the studio with lab-processed photographs sized 11" x 14".
The press kit contains press documentation to promote the film dated February 11, 1982 in five stapled sets at 8 1/2" x 11" while the heavyweight matte finish photographs were issued in large format, processed on Kodak paper by the marketing department to promote the film's theatrical release.
Press kits of this size were not a common effort by studios as the costs were excessive. Heavyweight lab-processed photographs were produced for various productions, but in very limited numbers, and commonly during early phases of promotional efforts, while smaller press kits were produced in large volume with less-expensive photo processing. This kit contains 19 photographs. Condition is quite remarkable, having never been mounted or used in any promotion for the film, with some slight yellowing occurring near the edges on the reverse side, and one image having discoloration on the surface.
Photographs include black and white processed images of Kurt Russell and supporting cast, along with Producer David Foster and Co-Producer Stuart Cohen. The documentation covers a synopsis of the film plot, revealing details including the ending. Also included are production notes and details on the special effects by Roy Arbogast, Albert Whitlock and Rob Bottin.
Staples carry a small bit of rust, which has marred the surface pages from storage. The folder does have some wear, as they commonly have, but minor and primarily on the edges. Overall, this is an item that rarely surfaces in availability, and in this condition. This is one of three ever seen at this size over the last 20 years, with another in-hand and with less contents.
This is just one of many examples Hollywood Cargo is listing of the different steps of motion picture development, production and promotion processes with other items associated to The Thing being listed
