    Description

Winner receives an original signed and dated pencil drawing on brown paper by well listed Israeli artist Anna Ticho (1894-1980). The drawing is titled "Hills Of Jerusalem" and is signed and dated either 1964 or 1966 in the lower left corner, seen magnified in picture 6. The drawing has impeccable provenance, purchased directly from the artist in Israel in 1966 by Elaine Graham Weitzen. The drawing retains the original gallery label from Elaine Graham Weitzen Fine Arts, seen magnified in picture 8. Elaine Graham Weitzen (1920-2017) was a private New York City art dealer and committed philanthropist whose honed eye and interest in new and emerging artists helped to create an eclectic and personal collection. Inspired by her mother’s passion for music and art, Mrs. Weitzen began collecting art in the 1950s and soon established friendships with artists Mark Tobey, Charles Seliger, George Rickey and Arnold Newman, among others. As founding Executive Director and a lifelong Trustee of the Board of the American Friends of the Israel Museum, Mrs. Weitzen worked closely with the museum and Isamu Noguchi to create the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden, and worked with curators to build the museum’s collection. Included in Mrs. Weitzen’s own collection is a selection of works by Israeli artists Yehiel Shemi, Yaacov Wexler, and Yaacov Agam, and works by artists from the Middle East including Benni Efrat. A devoted member of the Board of The Sculpture Center, the Collection of Elaine G. Weitzen is rich in the area of sculpture and champions the work of young sculptors and established artists alike. Included are works by George Rickey, Jean Arp, Ronald Bladen, Menashe Kadishman, and José de Rivera. Mrs. Weitzen’s close relationships with Charles Seliger and Mark Tobey can be seen in her holdings of their work which include many gifts and exemplify her personal commitment to the artists with whom she worked. Seeing herself as a bridge between the business of the art world and the artists themselves, Weitzen understood the challenges artists face while trying to create their art and earn a living. Mrs. Weitzen’s life’s passion for the arts and her commitment to young and emerging artists is supported by The Elaine G. Weitzen Foundation for Fine Arts. The drawing is in excellent original condition with no rips, tears, repairs, foxing, toning, creasing, or in-painting. The original water gold gilt frame is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, losses, or repairs visible. Along the back edge, where the painting lays against the wall, there are some minor losses to the gilding along with barely visible chipping. The drawing is an absolute gem and ready for hanging as-is. The frame measures roughly 22.25" x 16.75", with the image itself measuring roughly 16" x 10". Below is some information about the artist, whose auction results include sales up to ,000.

Anna Ticho (1894-1980) was born in Brunn, Austria in 1894. In 1912 she immigrated to Israel and married Dr. Albert Abraham Ticho, a renowned ophthalmologist. When she first arrived to Israel she brought with her from Vienna memories of prominent painters such as Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka along with the old master drawings in the Albertina Library.
Ticho is known for her beautiful landscape drawings of Jerusalem and its surroundings, the Judean Hills. She loved the stone terraces, the old houses and considered it to be the oldest landscape in the world. Ticho focused on nature and the stony surface of the naked mountains without any human traces aside few secluded houses. She was among the founders of the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem.
The Ticho’s residence in Jerusalem was bequeathed to the Israel Museum several years ago and is now used as a center for art activities and for a permanent exhibition of Anna Ticho’s work. She had exhibitions in Vienna, Paris, New York, Amsterdam, Jerusalem, and her drawings are included in famous collections all over the world.
