Description
I'm selling this rather large size Italian master drawing, dating back to the first half of the 18th century. The drawing, executed in pen, brush, ink, grey wash and watercolors on laid paper, shows a religious scene, depicting the biblical story of "Jesus and the woman taken into adultry".
Our drawing, finished in watercolors, could have been a final modelo, preparatory for a larger scale painting. This way, the artist was able to give a good impression of the final result to his clients.
Authorship : the drawing is from the Italian-Bolognese School, attributed to Domenico Fratta.
DOMENICO MARIA FRATTA (Bologna 1696 - Bologna 1763) : Painter, draughtsman, printmaker of the Bolognese School. A pupil of Domenico Maria Viani and Carlo Rambaldi, Domenico Fratta seems to have little or no success as a painter, and is best known as a draughtsman and printmaker. In this he was particularly indebted to Creti, whom he would have met at the Casa Fava in Bologna, and who was to have a profound influence on his draughtsmanship. Fratta produced a large number of reproductive drawings and engravings after the work of earlier Bolognese painters, and contributed illustrations for Giampietro Zanotti’s Storia dell’Accademia Clementina, published in 1739. In later years he developed problems with his eyesight that made it difficult for him to continue working as an engraver, and instead provided finished drawings as models for other printmakers.
As a draughtsman, Fratta worked mainly in pen, with a manner indebted to that of his teacher and mentor Creti (indeed, drawings by him are often confused with those of the elder artist). Fratta also produced a number of highly finished pen drawings, including several landscapes, which were in all likelihood intended as autonomous works of art for sale.

This will keep me in the South of France till the 9th of September. Thereafter, I'll be returning to Italy (Tuscany), where we'll be competing in the cycling race GRAN FONDO STRADE BIANCHE in Sienna. The race will be on at September 12. On the 14th, we're getting back to Belgium with just a brief stop near Munich. I'll be back home on the 16th. This way, I won't be able to ship during this period. Shipments will re-start right away after my return on the 16th of September. Sales will continue and communication won't be a problem (first sales ending on the 1th of September).
This way, I'll thank all of you for your understanding and continious support.
