    About the Work
Marie-Josephe Sanson rests an executioner's sword on her shoulders.
    This artwork was created for
the Dress Code: Are You Playing Fashion?
exhibition held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
It is paired with a work of art depicting Marie Antoinette.
The 18th-century clothing that Marie wears here was displayed in the museum at the same time.
Note the detailed embroidery that shines created with gold thread and pearls, as well as the three-dimensional effect.
The contours are daringly flat and ornately outlined.
Though the work is painted with feminine colors, it features grim motifs such as a guillotine, a chain, and a wheel represented in the Sanson family crest.
Clad in thorns with her arms outstretched and legs crossed, Marie's figure is reminiscent of a crucifixion painting.
Both man and woman. The roles of the executioner and the executed are reversed.
Marie glares at the viewer fearlessly amidst the blue roses that made the impossible possible.
