Description
From a recent find in a collection in Leiden (West Holland), is this 19th century French drawing, part of a set of five drawings by the same artist.The present drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on 19th century paper, depicts a resting traveller in a rocky landscape. The man sits on a tree trunk near the entrance of a cave.
Authorship : the drawing is from the French School, signed right below "de Bez". This is the signature of Jean Joseph Bastier de Bez.
The drawing is signed as well on the paper mat (top mid).
JEAN JOSEPH BOSTIER (also written Bastier) DE BEZ D'ARRE(Le Vigan 1780 - Paris 1860) : French painter, draughtsman, born in the Gard region (South of France). After working as a stockbroker first, he decided to become a full time artist (ca. 1820). He was a painter of (animated) landscapes and is registered exposing at the Paris Salon on a regular base from 1824 till 1842.
Period : the drawing is dated (top paper mat) in the year "1821".
Size : 14,5x10,8cm (without mat).
Condition : Good. Some scattered dirt throughout. Attached to a simple paper mat (period). Matted. Unframed.

Important : I will get back on the road for markets on the 30th of August. The first one will be in Bologna, Italy on the 31th. From Italy, I'll be travelling to the South of France for the three international pro antiques markets in combination with some local events. This will keep me in the South of France till the 9th of September. Thereafter, I'll be returning to Italy (Tuscany), where we'll be competing in the cycling race GRAN FONDO STRADE BIANCHE in Sienna. The race will be on at September 12. On the 14th, we're getting back to Belgium with just a brief stop near Munich. I'll be back home on the 16th. This way, I won't be able to ship during this period. Shipments will re-start right away after my return on the 16th of September. Sales will continue and communication won't be a problem (first sales ending on the 1th of September).
