COWBOY ON HORSEBACK  ( CIRCA 1920 ).
Original sepia ink drawing on light cream wove paper laid on mat board: signed lower left: circa 1920: sheet / image size: 8 3/4 x 6 3/8 inches: circa 1920 gold leafed frame: frame size: 15 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches: attributed to Charles Russell.
Work has no history of ownership: was purchased in a garage sale in Billings, Montana in 1989.
Overall condition is good: actual paper color is closer to that in my second photo taken with flash: no holes or tears: some minor paper toning: frame shows some minor wear: chip in upper left corner has now been professionally restored: new archival mat and new archival frame backing: old glass has been replaced with new museum grade UV protective plexiglas.
Charles Merion Russell was born in St. Louis Mo. in 1864 and died in Great Falls, Montana in 1926. He created more than 2000 paintings and thousands of drawings of Western subjects: museums worldwide conserve his works:
