The first Atlantic Tall Ships Race in 1956 had 20 vessels sailing from Torquay, England, to Lisbon, Portugal, and was seen as a farewell to the old ships of sail. Later routes included ports in the Baltic, around Europe, and in the Mediterranean. The first Trans-Atlantic Challenge Race was held in 1984, and was sponsored by Cutty Sark Whisky until 2003.
The route for the 2009 event took the Tall Ships from
Vigo

Tenerife
, Canary Islands, then across the Atlantic to
Bermuda
, then on to
Charleston
, South Carolina,
Boston
,
Halifax
, Nova Scotia, and back across the Atlantic to
Belfast
, Ireland, where a crowd of 800,000 people welcomed them home.
