After 1948 penitentiary system became one of most powerful instruments of
Communist dictatorship.
Severe overcrowding, Cells were tiny, facilities primitive ( only one toilet in 26-man cell in Valdice ,5 toilets for 160 inmates in Minkovice , one washroom and one shower in Belusice for 250 inmates)

Prisoners must work is much faster than in similar civilian factories. Achieving norm is made even more difficult by poor condition of machinery,inadequacies of maintenance staff,absence os spare parts and dangerous working conditions )...................miserable medical care ( Prisoners may see doctor only once week on specific day. Prison doctor has only one duty – constantly to keep number of sick prisoners to minimum.Doctors in prisons are nicknamed Mengele )

Family visits were sometimes curtailed or prohibited. .............Complaints about food were widespread, and dietary deficiencies led to ailments that required medical attention after release.........,. Prisoners were charged daily rate for their upkeep, which they were required to pay after release ( Prisoner must pay 50 Kcs per day for punishment,even though food he receives is valued at only 3,50 Kcs.When prisoner does not work as when he is in solitary confinement, he earns nothing.As result many prisoners leave prison with heavy debts ) ..........Prisons were in extremely poor condition, most having been built prior to World War II or even prior to World War I and never modernized. .........Punishments of prisoners included cutting already small food ration or taking away the privilege of receiving package once every three months. Prisoners or former prisoners who complained publicly about mistreatment and poor prison conditions were severely punished -
were accused of "divulging state secrets".
If work-norms was not fulfilled,food portion was reduced by half...........Educational programs were slashed and prisoners were limited to one library book or one newspaper per week.In most cases library books were collections of speeches by communist party officials.
SHOPPING
Once fortnight prisoner make purchases using their allowance money.Shopping takes place by proxy. One prisoner is chosen to do shopping on behalf of whole unit. Limit is 30 tea bags and 15 measures of tobacco and cigarette paper. Choice of foodstuffs is extremely limited.No even basic items such as meat products are available. Prisoner is permitte to make purchases only up to limit of 300 Kcs ( crowns ) / per month in prison currency. If more money is found on prisoner during body search - excess is confiscated. Prisoner must eat food they have bought immediately, it is not permitted to heat food.............
In 1995 government estimated that 1980s prisoner labor cost 40 % of normal free labor
