*Uros
Tošković (TOCHKOVITCH), considered among the top European outsider artists, was born in a poor family in Montenegro, a part of Yugoslavia. His childhood was marked by poverty, an abusive father, and the atrocities of World War II. His three brothers died fighting for the Yugoslav Partisans.
Tošković graduated Art School in 1952 in the class led by Petar Lubarda and Milo Milunović. In Belgrade, he also graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1956 in the class mentored by Marko Čelebonović. During studies in Belgrade, Tošković partnered with Dado Đurić, Olja Ivanjicki and others, forming the alternative artist group Mediala [sr] in 1953.
*In 1956, Tošković moved to Paris, upon receiving a French government scholarship for the École des Beaux-Arts, where he graduated under the mentorship of Maurice Brianchon. He lived and worked in Paris until 1976, leading an ascetic and bohemian lifestyle, occasionally as a vagabond. He was a close friend of Dado, fellow Montenegrin painter who gained international recognition.
In 1987 Toscovic received the 13th July Award, the highest civil award issued by the Government of Montenegro.
Tošković died on 3 March 2019 at the age of 86.
*Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. The term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut (French for "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture including untrained artists, children and psychiatric patients. It has been said of Toscovic in regard to the darkness of his material that "His night is longer than his day." His vision is powerful, inspired and uncompromising.
*Size is approximately 11.5 x 16.5 inches ~
*Pen and ink on Stiff Art Paper - Signed and Dated in Pencil ~
*Piece is Untitled, but depicts what appears to be a Tortured Body Missing One Foot. Most of Tochkovitch's material is very dark, often in all black paint or ink. Stark and powerful.
*Signed by Tochkovitch and dated "1956" this is a very early piece - Perhaps from his first year in Paris
