    Description

This auction is for a circa 1900 San Mateo county drawing at San Andreas Lake. It may be earlier but I am judging this by the hunters ensemble or hunting garb . This has been a trunk since 1964 and is a very special piece of early San Mateo California history .
This area is off the old Sawyer Camp Trail which heads near Crystal Springs Reservoir at the top of today’s Crystal Springs Rd , Stage Road .
I studied the stereo views created by Carleton Watkins knowing he was in the area in the late 1860s and I came across one titled “The Cove “that had such a strong resemblance I got the shivers !
I have attached a comparison image of the trees and trail . There is a complete database online you can see of Watkins stereo views and a very informative book I read online when he was at San Andreas and Pilarcitos lakes .
This early drawing at one time before 1964 was wood backed . There are large 3’ or better circular saw marks that have left there mark on the papers reverse . Most likely cut from massive first growth coastal Redwood trees .
    This drawing measures 17” x 13”.
